The Islamic Association of Lincoln, a registered Charity (Charity Reg. No. 1090992) was founded in 1980. Lincoln is a city situated in the county of Lincolnshire, which is in the East Midlands of the United Kingdom. Back in 1980, there were a few Muslim families in Lincoln who decided that a Mosque was needed for prayers. A building that was a Baptist Church was found and purchased for £5000 in 1981.
Our objectives are to promote Islam to Muslims and Non-Muslims and increase awareness of Islam in the Community. Its important that at this time to give true image of Islam to non-Muslims. Over the past 5 years we have had over 10 non-Muslims, who have converted to Islam. Lincoln has one of the larger Muslim communities in Lincolnshire, which is the 2nd largest county in country. We have links with other Muslim communities in and around the county such as in Boston and Louth. We are keen to develop our networks in the county in order to promote unity and brotherhood. It has become clear over the past few years that our Community requires a new large premises in order to cater for the Community’s needs, our current attendance at Jumah prayers is around 150 and this is rising steadily.
Over the past few years the Muslim population of Lincoln has expanded steadily and in particular over the last 2-3 years, it has grown rapidly. We now have approximately 2000 Muslims in Lincoln and surrounding areas. Our current Mosque capacity is only 60. Lincoln has Muslims from diverse backgrounds – we have professionals such as doctors and engineers, there are also several restaurant businesses owned by brothers from Bangladesh. We also have approximately 700-1000 refugees who have come mainly from Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo. |
